What are stalker zombies? The stalker zombies are arguable one of the most feral types. They are quadrupedal, meaning they move on all fours. That’s a horrifying sight, and much like a wild animal, they move aggressively. Some theories state that this reversion to being quadrupeds was due to a step back on the evolutionary chain. What are stalker zombies? Stalker zombies are much more mobile than crawlers since they still have the use of their legs. They are also much faster than the standard walker type, though not as fast as the runner type. Still, their speed is enough to cause worry when it comes to chases.  What are stalker zombies? Additionally, since they are on all fours, they operate lower on the ground and are thus as difficult to spot as crawlers. The evolutionary reversal also dialed back their intelligence level, so they attack any living thing, whether human or animal.

The Exploder Type

What are stalker zombies? The exploder type zombies usually have a massive build-up of explosive gas in their digestive track, caused by the constant decaying process of their flesh and other body parts. They can willingly explode themselves on their target, or the explosion could be triggered when they are shot or attacked with a melee weapon.

They are terribly dangerous opponents in close range combat. As zombies, they don’t feel hesitation or fear, so there is nothing holding them back from sending out infectious matter like blood sprays and bone fragments when it is time to explore. If you want to take out an exploder type, you would have to do so carefully and from a range far enough to avoid whatever the explosion sends off.

The trickiest part about exploder type zombies is that they look like any other regular zombies. This makes them extremely hazardous. You don’t quite know when you are facing an exploder type until it is too late. Some exploding type zombies have bloating in their abdominal region, but other than that, there is no clear-cut quality that separates them from the rest.

The Burster Type

Featured in Charlie Higson’s Undead book series, the burster type zombies are completely infected zombies, right to the last body part. As such, if they are touched, they would instantly burst. Like the exploder type, they send out blood and organic matter like internal organs and fats upon bursting.

The Tank Type

What are stalker zombies? Featued in Left 4 Dead, the tank type zombies have mutated and have built a massive base strength. They can be strong enough to lift and throw cars. They can even rip chunks of concrete out of the ground to use as weapons.

The tank mutation might be because they have used steroids or have been extremely athletic before turning into zombies. If you want to take out tank type zombies, prepare powerful firearms. Maybe requisition an actual military-grade tank to take them out.

A subtype of the tank type would be the Rams, feature in Dead Island. They are super muscular zombies that are also extremely strong and durable.

The Armored Type

The armored type of zombies possess either natural or artificial armor that makes them much more durable and resistant to attacks. They can be former police or military personnel wearing vests or maybe even carrying shields. Since they have a bit more protection than the standard zombie walkers, they often act as unintentional shields for their horde. If you are going up against an armored zombie, make sure to go for the weak spots.

The Creeps

What are stalker zombies? One could argue that all zombies are creepy. But what makes the creep type zombies, well, really creepy is that they have been reanimated not by pathogens or viruses but by parasites.

With creeps, the zombification process starts from the parasitic organism that enters the brain, lays eggs, gestates, and then bursts out to destroy the host. Even though the host was already dead, the parasites could still reanimate the corpse and turn the body into a dangerous threat. Indeed, most of the hosts have been recently dead or on the verge of dying. When the parasites have finally reanimated the body, the creeps could even pass as a living human sometimes.

The Bloater Type

What are stalker zombies? Bloater type zombies exhibit advanced rotting and decomposition. And rotting bodies are notoriously stinky, mostly due to all the gas produced as the body breaks down. As the gas builds up, the body gets bloated. Bodies that end up bloating have probably been around for a while, leading to their current state. In some cases, they end up as exploder type zombies as well. If you face off with a bloater type, chances are you will discombobulated by the wretched stench. Have a wet rag ready to block out most of the smell and try to dispatch the zombie as quickly as possible. If you can, increase the distance between you just in case it turned out to be an exploder type.

What are the different kinds of zombies? Being a mere carrier may not sound like it’s a proper zombie type, but carriers are zombies waiting to happen. They are practically lockers full of the zombie infection. In some cases, they may even be dripping in poisonous liquids or full of disease-carrying insects. They are waking bio hazards, and though some may not be completely transformed yet, they still can harm you through infection or poison. It is not safe to engage these zombies in clos combat, and even the disposal of their corpses should be handled with immense care. Treat it as you would a fatal viral infection: wear protective clothing that covers your eyes, mouth, and nose. Use a long-handled weapon to keep your distance from them.

The Carrier Type

What are the different kinds of zombies? Remember that carrier zombies aren’t humans anymore; they are more like ticking time bombs that are going to kill you when they finally explode. Allowing a carrier to tag along with you won’t do anyone any favors. Don’t prolong their suffering and don’t doom yourself and the rest of your survival group to the same fate.

The Cougher Type

These types are closely related to the carrier type. Coughers don’t necessarily cough like a human does, but they do spread the disease as they walk around. Unlike the carriers, coughers are full-blown zombies that spread the disease – either the zombie infection itself or other disease they might have had before dying. Maybe even both.

What are the different kinds of zombies? What can be considered a subtype of the cougher type is the spitter. Again, this doesn’t necessarily mean that the zombie spits: zombies, in general, aren’t capable of moving their lips in ways other than that which allows them to consume flesh. Spitting in this context merely means that they eject fluids like saliva, which are a vehicle for the infection.

The Vomiting Type

Related to the spitting zombies, the vomiters are also known as one of the few zombies who can launch attacks, this time through vomiting. Vomiting doesn’t cause physical injury aside from being, well, pretty disgusting. And like the zombie’s saliva, the vomit is also highly infectious

The Crawler Type

What are the different kinds of zombies? The crawler types are pretty disturbing, which is saying a lot given that we’re talking about zombie lore. They are also called halvers, chopped, or ankle biters. Their lower bodies are disabled or even totally missing; thus, they are incapable of running or walking or even mere shuffling like other zombie types. This may be caused by their legs being severed or maybe crushed by large objects such as cars. Crawlers use their upper torso and arms to, well, move on the ground. Since large parts of their bodies are missing, their mobility is seriously cut down too, making it easier to take them out.

However, since they are pretty low on the ground, they are easy to miss as well. Expect surprise attacks from crawlers emerging from under vehicles or hiding in tall grass. If you are not careful, you could be taken down by crawlers by latching onto your legs, biting them or even severing them too.

All the crawling around also makes these zombies a tad dirtier and grittier than their walking cousins.

The Talker Type

What are the different kinds of zombies? The talker type of zombies completely redefined what we know of zombies. Their appearance in Return of the Living Dead allowed us a glimpse into the zombie psyche. The scene where a female zombie was pulled through the window and asked why she ate people was particularly jarring. “Not people,” she said. “Brains.” Eating brains was implied to have helped in easing the pains of rotting. This made us realize that the zombies could physically feel their bodies rotting away, and to ease that, they were forced to seek out brains.

Terrifying, isn’t it?

The Screamer Type

What are the different kinds of zombies? Screaming is a step back from talking, when it comes to zombie types. Screamer types don’t yell out identifiable words; they just release ear-splitting screams that are just a pain to hear. And since other zombies tend to be attracted by loud noises, these screams can be a sort of beacon too. When you find yourself faced by a screaming zombie, chances are a whole horde of zombies would be arriving soon too.

You would have to make your escape, and make it quick! It will be difficult, since the shrill noise screamers release would leave your ears ringing for hours to come. You will feel disoriented, but you have to gather your wits and fight for your survival.

The Bonies

What are the different kinds of zombies? They could be considered the final stage of zombification, in which most of the flesh has rotted away from the initial corpse. Bonies aren’t often motivated to do anything, and are pretty content with just chilling. They are slow and deliberate unless some need arises that requires them to move more quickly. They usually reside in large zombie nests and don’t do much and don’t attack to shed blood. It’s like they attack to make more zombies.

What are the types of Zombies? With the boom of zombie popularity in modern media, there is a demand from both viewers and creators to make various types of zombies that stand out in the crowd. What are the types of Zombies? Across pop culture, be it through films, televisions, or even video games, zombies abound in different forms, with different ticks and origins. What are the types of Zombies? Here’s the first part of our list explaining various types of zombies seen in modern media.

The Generic Type

What are the types of Zombies? Well, this is pretty basic. Generic zombies have once been humans, then they were killed and were reanimated though biochemical means, typically by a pathogen or virus. These are the most common zombies. The zombie infection is spread through blood contact or even airborne virus that infects the living. Generic zombies generally look disoriented and lack understanding of their environment. They can also be curious. They may look pretty harmless at a distance but make no mistake: once they catch you, they will kill and eat you, unless they infect you first.

Better stir clear of them at all cost.

The Walker Type

Walking zombies, or walkers, can be considered another name for generic zombies. They appear in shows like The Walking Dead and Night of the Living Dead. They are the zombies that don’t chase you as intensely as Runners do, but they do tend to be successful in capturing prey (you) because they generally attack in groups. Also, they are durable and can last long in pursuits. Definitely bad news.

The Runner Type

What are the types of Zombies? Runner zombies appear in shows like Dawn of the Dead, Zombieland, World War Z, and 28 Days Later.  They are also the enemies in the Left 4 Dead video game series. These zombies are difficult to escape from because they can run at a full sprint. They obviously don’t need to breathe as well, so it is an extremely bad idea to try and outrun them because they won’t tire.

The runner type is probably one of the scariest types of zombies. Walking zombies are already scary enough when they shuffle around in search of the next victim, but that fearsomeness is amplified when you give them the ability to run.

Runner zombies can be considered technically both living and dead. They are infected but the transformation isn’t complete yet, so they still retain the human capabilities of such as running. Most runners don’t show much decaying yet either, so you can have a hard time telling apart a blood-soaked soon-to-be zombie meal from an actual bloodthirsty monster. Runner zombies are pretty animalistic; they are predators with a single-track focus, and they won’t slow down to have hesitations or doubts like humans do.

What are the types of Zombies? The only way to stop them is to take away their ability to run: usually, you would have to severe the large muscle groups and major bones of their legs. If you can, cut off the legs wholly. If you can’t manage to get close enough to slice their legs off, then the next best thing to do is to eliminate them totally with a gunshot to the head or make them explode.

Runner zombies, though faster than walkers, are not as durable as their slower kin. They can also be eliminated through wounds to the chest too. If you can bleed them out with chest wounds or other such injuries, then it could stop them.

The Leader Type

What are the types of Zombies? You’re probably thinking that a leader type among zombies is impossible. They are, after all, mindless, thoughtless undead beings whose sole purpose is to kill (and eat human flesh). Though that’s true, there are rare cases in which zombies manage to rise above the others and become essentially leaders.

The leader type is most often seen in George A. Romero’s zombie stories. This is why this type is also called Romero zombies, featured for example in Dawn of the Dead. In Romero’s stories, a person who dies is reanimated as a zombie. It is death that completes the transformation, as the zombie bite is merely a carrier of the infection. The typical Romero zombie can be significantly similar to the generic zombie; they react to sound and light, they are slow, and they have a single-minded determination to consume human flesh.

Unlike other zombie iterations, such as in Walking Dead, Romero’s zombies can adapt, learn, and even plan out their actions to some degree. In this regard, they have a degree of intelligence above their brethren’s. They can also grow and develop, and in some cases, even recall some habits they had when they were still humans. For instance, in Day of the Dead, Bub knew how to use a razor and a toothbrush. In Dawn of the Dead, Flyboy became the leader when he led the zombie horde in the mall. What are the types of Zombies? This learning attribute makes them trickier to eliminate, especially if you harbor some sort of hesitation over dispatching of someone who used to be human.

There are numerous zombie running games out there but the best ones remain a rare treat. When it comes to ranking them we can do so through different approaches. For instance, video games have long appreciated the undead for not just their horror factor as they are being played but also for the plot, the characters and of course the visual graphics. Whether you’re playing a zombie game that involves a lot of running or a shooting an endless horde of flesh – eating zombies there’s something special about the living dead – and our itch to return them back to their graves where they properly belong. In this article, we’ll take a look at some of the best zombie running games you can play just by yourself or with friends.

The Walking Dead

It would be a grave sin if we do not include Telltale’s The Walking Dead in this list because it’s definitely a must – play for avid zombie fans out there. Even if you’re not a fan of zombies, you’ll surely have fun and learn a lot when you play with this game. Unlike other zombie games that will have you chop off heads or shoot hordes of zombies in the brains with cool weapons, this game is all about strategy. It’s a point – and – click action – pack adventure that focuses more on the human psychology and how one will respond should a zombie apocalypse happen. Instead of just killing zombies, this game will test the player’s decision – making abilities and how one can overcome fear because there are definitely lots of messed – up situations. It’s a really well thought – of game that explores the human side of this whole phenomenon.

You will play as Lee Everett who is a convicted murderer, and as you encounter other survivors, you will have to make choices down the line that can have consequences for you or other members in the group. Perhaps the reason why this game is the best of all time is because players forms a connection and empathize with the characters as they go along so if one of them gets killed, you will feel as if you really lost a friend. Bottom line is that decisions need to be made and people will die but just like in real life, you have to live with the consequences and carry on.

This game is available on Xbox One, Xbox 360, PC, PS4, PS3, Android and iOS

Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 – Zombies

There are more recent games in Call of Duty that has their own zombie modes but the best by far is the endless undead – slaying experience of Black Ops 3. Treyarch which is the lead studio of Black Ops franchise originated a sub – series in the previous installment of Call of Duty: World at War. The Black Ops 3 is the completion of the time – travelling premise. The game is the right place to play if you’re an avid fan of Call of Duty.

You’ll surely enjoy going through all the key moments within the 15 maps provided just to save yourself from the Nazi Zombie apocalypse. In addition to Treyarch’s zombie story, the game also incorporated key changes including the Gobble Gums ability and also Prestige that most pro zombie players use. We cannot wait for Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 but for now Black Ops 3 is the best zombie running games under the Call of Duty installments.

This game is available on Xbox One, Xbox 360, PC, PS4, and PS3.

The Last of Us

Another great game that’s one for the books is 2013’s Game of the Year, The Last of Us. It wouldn’t bag this prestigious award for nothing. You’ll soon find yourself playing one of the most intense and engrossing zombie – related gaming experience. It will take players through a dangerous cross – country adventure through the infected areas that had been overrun by plantations. Aside from the flesh – eating zombies waiting to attack you, you will also encounter psychotic villains, desperate selfish humans and a repressive government – not to mention that you have to go through it all with a teenage girl that will annoy you and also save your life from time to time.

You will get to see the intense and dark journey of Joel and Ellie, and you’ll go through dilapidated and eerie zombie world that’s deliberately set for a stealth game play. This game takes zombie suspense to the next level so don’t expect that it’s going to be another typical gun – blazing zombie running game because you will also need to be strategic to survive. You need to beat strong enemies, hunt for supplies and conserve your ammunitions. It’s a very graphic, action – packed, and in – your – face adventure that’s emotionally engaging you’d feel as if you’re really the character in the game. The Last of Us is still the reigning zombie survival game today.

This game is available on PS4 and PS3.

Left 4 Dead 2

Another action – packed zombie running games is The Left 4 Dead series. This game focuses more on teamwork and strategy. If you want to survive, it’s all about learning how to lead a team because if you don’t and you try to go at it alone, you’re as good as dead. The game requires you to get your team members from one point to another with wild and crazy zombies standing in your way. Unfortunately, the horrific zombies are only a tip of the iceberg because the crazy part is that you need to get passed with the so – called “super zombies” that also work together to eat your well – coordinated and heavily – armed team. If you enjoy playing with your friends or with a team then this is the best game to play.

This game is available on Xbox One, Xbox 360, and PC

State of Decay 2

Even if this 2.0 version doesn’t fix all the flaws of the original it’s now much better than its predecessor. If you’re not familiar with the first series, it’s all about helping you tell your tale of surviving the zombie apocalypse through a map – dotted set that has resources and other survivors that you can befriend or play. The best thing with this new version is that they are already adding multi – player options. You can now invite your friends to help scavenge for settlement and defend supplies to expand the possibilities of your storytelling. You can also have the opportunity to test out your survival plans

This game is available on Xbox One and PC.

Zombies are sub – genre of horror, and as we all know it’s already very saturated. It eventually became a hype or sort of a fad type thing from Walking Dead and Resident Evil to Twilight and Jennifer’s Body. Needless to say, there were way too many zombies films made – a lot of them are actually terrible but doesn’t mean there aren’t many well – made films out there. This is why in this article we will cover top 5 unconventional zombie TV shows and movies. The list you’ll see below includes films and TV series that aren’t the most influential but has pretty interesting plot twists that may satisfy serious zombie fans out there that’s far from mainstream shows.  So without further ado here they are:

#1: The Hoard (2009)

This is a French horror film that’s just really gory, bloody and has that in – your – face action. Great for people who also love watching bloody murder shows. It’s very brutal but has amazing action scenes that immediately draws you in and puts yourself in the position of the characters and feel that the stakes are real. There’s also a sprinkle of comedy and over – the – top moments that’s ridiculous but it’s also grounded though sometimes it would seem unrealistic. You will definitely empathize with the characters especially when they’re trying to work together to just kill one zombie. It is set in a very intense environment where the zombie apocalypse quickly spread and there’s not much time to prepare. The characters in the film are composed of police officers and criminals or drug lords that ended up in the same building because of a sting operation which obviously didn’t happen because they need to then team – up against the aggressive zombies coming their way. I think this is a great foreign film but obviously I can’t spill too much scenes without spoiling it for you, so just have to check it out for yourself. Definitely a must – see for you tough guys out there since it’s a hard – hitting but also hilarious 5 unconventional zombie TV shows zombie film.

#2: PontyPool (2008)

PontyPool is based from a best – selling book with the same title. It’s a 2008 Canadian zombie film. The interesting thing about this film is that it doesn’t have that many zombies in it. The zombies in the film are not something you will see in traditional mainstream or even unconventional films. It’s quite hard to explain how it spread out without giving you spoilers but you can always check out the trailer to see if this is something you would like to watch. It’s definitely one of the best zombie commentary films of all time. Pontypool delves with political, social, and psychological topics about the human condition including government and society in general. There’s also lots of awesome atmospheric sub – text in the film. It’s very well – put together and just brilliantly crafted from start to finish. The way they use dialogue in this film is very well – crafted as it becomes sort of the focal point of the movie since it is set against a radio broadcast with the host and its team. The way they portray the messages are also fantastic. Pontypool is definitely a horrific, mind – boggling and atmospheric zombie movie that made the most out of sounds and expressions to bring horror into the film instead of the usual visual action or traditional fast – moving zombie thrillers. However, PontyPool may confuse some viewers because it has this subjective and eclectic taste but it’s just one of the incredible must – see zombie films ever produced. It’s also worth binge watching with your friends every Halloween.

#3: Rec (2006)

The next one is the 2006 Spanish horror film Rec. Quarantine is the American version of Rec which is still a great movie but of course nothing beats the original – that’s just my opinion, so see for yourself. It’s a first – person point of view footage film that’s set in an apartment building where people turned into flesh – eating zombies. The film has a disease angle on the zombie apocalypse which changes in the part two and expanded further on in Rec: Origins, all of which are very interesting and entertaining zombie flick. You’ll definitely feel as if you’re in the building along with all these flesh – eating walkers and go to all these dark rooms. It’s a great film in the zombie genre and definitely a must – see for serious zombie fanatics. It’s very intense so make sure to get lots of popcorn and pee before you watch this one.

#4: Deadgirl (2008)

This film is seriously f*cked up but in a good way. It’s not something that I would normally recommend to people but I included it here because the plot is quite symbolic. So while it’s extremely disgusting and horrible to watch even from someone who already has seen a lot of gory movies, it is deliberately made that way to portray a message. The movie is very well – put together, and you’ll also see great scenes that are incredibly well done. The ending is also fantastic. The film is all about having that contextual criticism of abusive relationships as well as the horrors of human psychology set within the confines of zombie and horror genres. This movie is not for the faint of heart.

#5: Dead Set (2003)

Dead Set is a 5 – episode British TV mini – series that’s centered around a fictional Big Brother House set in the midst of the zombie apocalypse. It’s a really an entertaining, funny and action – packed TV show because the zombies are fast – moving and intense which is something that most people prefer since the chase is thrilling. The zombies are hard to kill which is way better than a traditional zombie characters. We highly recommend you to watch this one because it’s over – the – top fun series to watch, very thrilling and also combines the elements of great zombie movies. It contains lots of humor and also dark humor, has compelling characters where some of whom goes from being weak and passive to these strengthened bad – ass types, so you’ll see how each of them progresses. The TV series also did a great job in using zombies as sort of the channel to critique modern pop – culture and how people watch reality television or how we as a modern society demand and absorb media. Dead Set is definitely a great TV series that portray zombies right – assuming that there’s a right way to do them.

Everyone knows that death is the point of no return for us humans, there’s no coming back from it but of course depending on one’s religion, some believe that the dead could reincarnate as a different living thing or maybe head to other planes of existence. In any case, death is the end of our earth – bound lives; but as it turns out there are a number of people who came back from this thing called death; and didn’t let grim reaper get the best of them.

This isn’t fiction because there are literally people who came back to life and it even dates back to the time of Jesus when he performed a miracle to Lazarus and made him rose from his tomb three days.  Lazarus could arguably be the first ever real – life zombie! In this article we’ll share with you ten other people who literally came back from the dead but obviously don’t expect that they would look and act like how zombies are portrayed in the media; they look perfectly normal and like nothing happened but just like Lazarus, they have quite a story to tell.

#1: Fagilyu Mukhametzyanov

Usually when people pass away there’s a funeral but with Russian native Fagilyu’s case, who is 49 years old at the time, her death and funeral happed at the same time! Just like many people aforementioned; she was wrongfully declared deceased by her doctors after she suffered a heart attack in her house. In June 2011, she awakened in her coffin screaming because she heard people praying for her soul, the stressed caused her to have another heart attack but this time it actually took her life. Unfortunately, her husband only has around 12 minutes to be with her resurrected wife before she officially died.

#2: Brighton Dama Zanthe

I bet many of you imagine that when people come back to life, there’s like a hoard of zombies rising up and people running out of horror – that’s quite the case for 34 – year old Brighton Dama Zanthe minus the hoard of zombies.  On May 2013 after battling an illness for many years Zanthe, who was a transport worker; was declared dead. The next day as his family and friends gathered around his coffin to send him to his final resting place; he then woke up which obviously shocked the funeral attendees to the point that it caused panic amongst them; and everyone fled in terror for fear that the dead is rising. After Zanthe was rushed to the hospital; he was put on life support and about a few days later; he miraculously went back home claiming that he felt okay now as if nothing happened.

#3: Anne Green

In 1650, 22 – year old Anne Green was wrongfully sentenced to death for the murder of her kid. To make her death quick, she requested her friends to pull down on her while she hanged and strike her body just to make sure that she was dead. The prison doctor declared her dead and she was eventually moved to Oxford University to be dissected by medical students but the following day just a few moments before students dissect her body, physicians of the university found her to have a fake pulse and after various treatments she was revived back to life. People then considered the events as an act of God; Anne Green was given pardon for her “crime.” So, if you may want to get off the hook for murder or robbery, I guess you just have to die and be a zombie! Apparently, it’s a “get out of jail” card.

#4: Carlos Camejo

In 2007, 33 – year old Carlos Camejo from Venezuela was pronounced deceased; because he got into a car accident. His body was then taken to the morgue where an autopsy was performed on him. After doctors are making an incision in his face; they noticed a lot of bleeding which was unusual for dead bodies. All of a sudden, Carlos woke up screaming because the pain that’s overwhelming him. Doctors immediately stitched up his face and moved him to the corridor where his wife was grieving; thinking of herself now as a widow – arrived to identify his body. His wife were shocked to find out that his husband was alive but with a facial scar to remind him of his ordeal.

#5: Kelvin Santos

If you thought that Zanthe’s story was weird and borderline creepy, get yourself a blanket because this case is going to give you quite the chills! Two year old Kelvin Santos from Brazil; had pneumonia and was eventually rushed to the hospital but unfortunately doctors declared him deceased.

Kelvin’s family brought him home to have an open – casket wake overnight but the following day before the funeral starts, Kelvin sat up in his casket suddenly , then he looked at his father and said, “Daddy can I have some water?” The toddler’s entire family was flabbergasted to what they just witnessed; and then he just lay back down to his coffin again. His family was very shocked as they rushed to him on his side; only to find out that the boy’s dead once again but this time permanently. Doctors still can’t explain to this day how that was possible. I guess we will never know!

#6: Margorie McCall

Margorie McCall was known in Ireland as the lady who lived once but buried twice as stated in his epitaph. In 1705, McCall was prematurely buried after a physician declared her deceased due to a fever. According to Irish lore; McCall was buried with an expensive ring the first time which was obviously valuable to grave robbers. After exhuming her body, the thieves realized that her fingers has swelled up making it hard for them to remove the ring, so they just decided to cut her fingers off. As they began cutting Margorie’s finger, she woke up screaming from the pain which then made the robbers fled in terror. She then went home to her husband as if nothing happened.

Zombies have been a staple in the popular culture over the years, and in that time the concept of the dead rising from their graves and coming back to life to somehow haunt the living has proliferated in pretty much every form of media that exists today.

One trait that kept zombies in pop culture and seemingly synonymous with them is their apparent need to eat the brains of people, but why do you think this idea is so intrinsically associated with zombies, and more importantly how did this came about?

In this article, we’re going to talk about why zombies eat brains but before we get started we just want to be clear that the zombies referred here is the undead as they are understood in today’s pop culture and not those of West African and Haitian folklores which has an entirely different  identity altogether.

Night of the Living Dead

Initially, we thought that answering the question on the title is going to be easy since pop culture featuring the undead all have roots back to the same fictional source and that is from George Romero’s cinematic masterpiece, Night of the Living Dead. It’s quite true that the zombies had been around in different forms even before the release of the aforementioned film in 1968 but Romero’s film was considered to have introduced the concept of the modern zombie to the world we live in today.

These traits are quite prominent in almost every zombie movies and shows that had been produced over the years. In fact, Romero himself has no idea where the concept of zombie eating brains came from. He went on to explain that even if the zombies he portrayed in his films do indeed  eat human flesh, he didn’t really gave much thought as to why they do this, so we can arguably say that he didn’t start the fad of zombie eating brains. Nevertheless, Romero thought that it’s quite amusing to see how others have expanded the idea from his stupid zombies films.

Return of the Living Dead

The origin or idea of the stupid zombies eating brains didn’t appear until after the release of Return of the Living Dead which is also created by George Romero. After the release of the Night of the Living Dead, he and his co – writer named John Russo parted ways and reached to an agreement that Russo will retain the rights to the “Living Dead” suffix and Romero agreed to retain of the phrase “of the dead” in any form of media he’d produced.

So even if Russo was part of the creation of the original Night of the Living Dead franchise, the Return of the Living Dead isn’t considered part of the official “of the dead” series and that’s mainly due to the discrepancies in both the films they created.

Zombie Eating Brains, Anyone?

The answer of why stupid zombies feed on brains of the living could perhaps be explained by the writer and director of Return of the Living Dead, Dan O’Bannon. According to him, “the undead felt the need to feed on the brains of the recently living because it somehow made them feel better by easing their pain.”

Avid fans of the zombie genre have tried to expand on O’Bannon’s reasoning through asserting that zombies feed on brains and guts probably because of the high levels of serotonin found in these organs which is something that’s alluded to but no means confirmed by William Scott, the production designer for the film, in the movies commentary. He said it makes sense that zombies eat guts or brains because it will somehow alleviate the pain they are feeling.

Zombie Survival

As for investing such knowledge and time about how zombies came about, Romero is still known by many as the authority when it comes to zombies even if many people have criticized his work seriously including Max Brooks who is the author the best – selling book The Zombie Survival: Complete Protection from the Living Dead.

Romero always maintained that the focus of his films isn’t actually the zombies – it’s people, it’s us or rather our reaction to them which is why their function or how it all started isn’t important.

For instance, the creator of the popular TV series, The Walking Dead has said that he will never reveal how the zombie outbreak started or how they infect people because it’s not their focus and they consider it unimportant to the story. It’s also the same with the romantic movie Shaun of the Dead starring Simon Peg where the cause of the zombie apocalypse and how exactly the zombies functioned was never revealed which was directly hinted as the homage to Romero’s films where the audience are similarly told why or how the zombies were able to exist.

Feeding On Brains

As for the idea of zombies feeding on brains which has managed to become very popular around the world despite the fact that it’s not a trait in Romero’s films and by extension almost all zombies in modern fiction share, The Simpsons is believed to be the main culprit behind this zombie eating brain phenomenon and popularized. One of the episodes on the show under the three house of horror segment entitled “Dial Z for Zombies” in 1992 which was a spoof of the Return of the Living Dead is one of the earliest piece of media (with the exception of the Return of the Living Dead itself) that features brain – eating zombies.

Back then millions of kids saw this Simpson episode before they were old enough to see any real zombie movie which is why it’s suspected that for a whole generation, this episode was the first they ever saw – and probably why pop culture today thinks that it’s the reason why zombies eat brains even if most the films we see under this sub – genre of horror have never featured a zombie where this is the case.

Let’s face it a zombie outbreak is something that almost everyone fantasizes about because for some reason it looks “cool” on TV shows and on the big screen. According to psychologists, pop culture’s fascination to zombies or the undead including vampires and other mythical creatures means that the society we live in today are somewhat trying to find meaning in our lives, and because purpose or meaning is sort of a hard thing to find, as a society we tend to be inclined in finding an escape to life’s big questions through the form of entertainment, particularly zombies since these creatures portrays a life without purpose. Whatever your reason is for being fascinated with these characters, it’s quite intriguing to ask yourself sometimes what would happen if a zombie outbreak occurs, and the most important thing is what are you going to do to survive? In this article we’re going to give some practical tips when it comes to surviving a possible zombie outbreak so that you won’t be clueless as you fight against the living dead.

Do You Have What It Takes?

Tip #1: NEVER Go Solo!

I mean why would you? Even if you’re The Rock, you wouldn’t want to traverse the world alone knowing that zombies are out there to get you anytime right? Unless of course if your travel buddies are already dead then you have no choice, but it’s always best to try to find somebody to go along with you in this crazy journey. Now travelling in groups can seem quite dangerous at times because you just never know on who’s hiding a bite and could feast on your flesh in the middle of the night – or day? But most survival experts agree that should a zombie outbreak really happens or a zombie apocalypse befall our Instagram – worthy civilization, your odds of survival are higher if you have allies with you.

Zombie Apocalypse

You see being in a group means that somebody is watching your back especially when you need it the most. You can also delegate tasks in the group particularly when you run out of supplies or when trying to find a new shelter. One of the main advantages of being in a group is that your supplies or territory will be protected not just against zombies but also other groups – this only entails that even in a zombie apocalypse, it’s every man for himself. If you are with a group, it’s much easier to intimidate other groups who might want to steal supplies from you. And while we’re at it, don’t ever go down. This strategy won’t work if it’s a different scenario, say when you’re being chased by a serial killer or something because as you have seen on films or TV shows, if someone climbs up to get away they usually get trap on the rooftop. Luckily this strategy works out if you’re being chased by a zombie because they are just terrible at climbing stairs or ladders, they’re not properly coordinated remember? So this means that your best bet is to move to a higher ground, if you can’t lose them by doing that, at least you have bought some time to prepare your next step. Once you get to the top, just keep quiet and stay out of sight until the zombies chasing you get distracted elsewhere.

Tip #2: Choose the Right Weapons

If you’re looking to survive when a zombie outbreak happens for a long time then you must have the right weapons to defend yourself because you will get attacked. Obviously the best weapon is a gun or a firearm because it lets you shoot them in the head with a bullet or two without actually facing them. Guns and firearms are light to carry and most importantly, they get the job done. Sure, axes and knives are cool and you may need to keep them as backup in case somebody jumps on you or if you run out of bullets but the problem is that you need to have strength when you use these tools, and you need to do it with accuracy otherwise you’re dead. So the lesson here is this: Don’t run out of bullets!

Tip #3: Armor Yourself Up!

Weapons will help you attack a zombie but putting on the right armor will keep you on the defense if one sneaks out behind your back. If there’s one thing that zombie flicks taught us is that they always go for exposed skin. Their target areas are the face, neck, arms and legs. Obviously if this is really happening, you would want to cover up every part of your body. Think yourself as a member of the army or SWAT forces, you are more protected and you get to kill zombies in style!

Tip #4: Food and Water Will Keep You Sustainable

This is something that needs no explanation but for the purposes of this blog I will elaborate more on why it’s important for a human being who’s in the middle of a zombie outbreak to have food and water all the time. Food and water should come first in your survival bag. Speaking of survival bag, never go anywhere without it; aside from food and water, your survival bag should include first aid kit, weapons/ tools, clothing, navigation, electronic devices for communication etc. The food and water should help you last for at least a few days to a few weeks. If ever you find yourself pinned down and hiding from a flock of zombies the food and water you have are your only chance of survival until something draws their attention away from your hiding spot. You have to make yourself sustainable just in case you get trap somewhere.

Tip #5: Be Prepared

Preparation is the key to survival not just during a zombie outbreak but life in general. The best way is to be ready even before it happens. This doesn’t only mean that you have your emergency survival bag with you at all times, it also means you have a plan – a well thought of one. You should know what to do once it happens and most importantly where to go. Should a zombie apocalypse occur and there’s blood on the streets, I’m pretty sure you’ll have no time to think which is why you need to already have a course of action to take. It may seem silly to prepare for such event but the tips aforementioned will also help you for other natural disasters.

One of the hottest topics in today’s pop culture is the countless tales of the undead particularly zombies. Zombies are constantly the topic of numerous films, TV shows, video games, books and of course, social media – they’re practically everywhere and its popularity is growing more than ever because they simply make compelling characters, create interesting plot twists, and perhaps provide viewers an entertaining escape to everyday living.

Most people believe that these zombies aren’t real, they’re nothing but fiction, and such characters are perhaps just born out of somebody’s imagination which was eventually passed on from one generation to another – maybe that’s true but what if I told you that’s not always the case? During the Medieval Period (A.D. 500 to 1500) in Northern and Western Europe, most people believe that zombies are real – and also dangerous. Back then people don’t fear death as much as they fear the dead.

History

Dating back to around the 12th and 13th century, Icelanders began writing the sagas. Sagas are stories that had been passed out through word – of – mouth from one generation to the next. Medieval Icelanders related the stories of their ancestors and many of them mentioned an undead creature known as “Draugr”. Draugr as they are known outside of Scandinavia were not classified as ghosts or spirits in the way that we know today but they were described as real corpses of the dead, and they were said to rise from their graves to do wicked things and scare the crap out of the living.

According to the sagas, these undead creatures climb up the roof of houses, eat livestock and pretty much create an atmosphere of horror and fear. The undead were described to have super human strength that enables to crush a human bone using their bare hands, and in some cases they also caused so much trouble and wreaked havoc in the community to the point that people have to abandon their farms and towns until the Draugr was properly dealt with which is done through decapitation or completely burning the entire body through a cremation – kind of like how we would kill a zombie as portrayed in the flicks we see today.

Not all Draugr roam freely, many undead were content to be buried in their mount and only become active if somebody tried to disturb them. The thing that separated the active dead to those who would rather stay put or maybe go to the afterlife is simple, and literature also agrees; their manner in life determine their manner in death which means if they are angry or violent people during their lifetime they’re going to be the same violent person when they rise from the dead.

Stories from the Sagas

One of the most famous undead that’s mentioned in the sagas was named Glam. He was a shepherd and works for a farmer named Thorhol who had a farm in northern Iceland but it was rumored to be haunted already before Glam took over the job.

Glam was described as a tough and apathetic guy; he was short on manners and doesn’t respect religion. One day after a long day of doing his job he didn’t return home.  People eventually found him dead in the nearby valley and everyone assumed that he was killed by the same malevolent force that haunted the farm. According to the sagas, Glam’s corpse was black and when they tried to carry him, he’s just too heavy. Soon enough however, Glam rose from the dead and came back as a Draugr. It was believed that he started slaughtering and eating horses and cows, breaking down doors, running in the fields at night and tackling anyone or anything that come near him. People eventually started abandoning the area.

Sagas

If you read the accounts written in the sagas, you would probably be curious as to why people who heard the stories didn’t think that it could be just fiction. Why did people back then actually believed it to be true? That’s because there are high levels of consistency in all the different accounts. This means that people who witnessed such creature even those who are outside of Iceland have described the Draugr with pretty much the same characteristics:

  • They’re dead
  • They’re violent
  • Change in size
  • They are very strong
  • Can’t communicate
  • They have flesh on their bones and didn’t completely deteriorated

Archeological Evidences

Archeological evidences also supports the theory of the undead which is why back then people made some precautions to ensure that the dead will not be able to get out of their grave and start wondering around. People began to place heavy rocks over the top of the dead bodies, binding the body to heavy chains, mutilating it and staking it down so that it won’t get up. There’s also an inscription from a stone in Sweden that says “Beware the Dead Destroyer.”

They were also quite a number of accounts outside Iceland including in places like Scandinavia and also Great Britain. A British cleric during the 12th century claims that the undead are real. He writes:

“These corpses of the dead moved by some kind of spirit, leave their graves and wander around as the cause terror and danger to the living before going back to their tombs that open up to receive them, is not something which would be easily believed but if not for the facts it wouldn’t be clear of exactly what happened to the abundant accounts of such events. “

Whether they were real or not, one thing’s for sure; the people from the Middle Ages believe they were.  As a matter of fact, many scholars agree that these people represented beliefs that pre – dated their conversion to Christianity. So the next time you watch The Walking Dead or play a really graphic zombie game, just keep in mind that at some point in history, they were more than just entertainment.

Before I tackle the strategies you can use to survive a zombie attack, it’s important to know what kind of attacker you’re going to have in the first place. You see, there are two types of zombies; there are slow zombies – the ones you see on Walking Dead, and then there are wild and fast zombies like those in the Resident Evil movies and the Dawn of the Dead.  If you happen to encounter a real – life zombie in your lifetime, I’m pretty sure you can easily identify if it’s a slow one or a wild one; the latter of course is a no – brainer because you’ll just find yourself running for dear life. Here’s another thing I want to point out, if you can’t get away from slow zombies I think you deserve to just be dismembered – unless of course you’re a senior citizen or someone who has mobility issues, you know, like you’re in a coma or you got stuck on something then that’s forgivable but if you’re not, and you still can’t get away from them slow walkers, you definitely deserve to be one of them, no offense.

So pretty much the only problem we’re all going to unfortunately face if the zombie apocalypse dawn on us is the wild and fast zombies. Simply because they’re wild AND fast, I mean what more could you ask for? They’re nothing short of a serial killer. They’re crimes of passion so to speak but perhaps the only difference is that zombie attack don’t know they’re killing people since they’re mentally incapacitated. In which case, I think it makes them more ethical than an actual murderer.

Anyway, going back to how you can deal with fast zombie attack, the only way you can really kill these crazy walkers is to destroy their brains but of course since they’re fast, a baseball bat or a wooden chair won’t cut it. You may need a gun or a really forceful weapon to blow their brains off. Since most people don’t have guns or other weapons around the house that could kill a deranged zombie, you need to leave the safety of your home and try to find something that could temporarily protect you. If ever you haven’t prepared ahead of time, check out the strategies below:

Seven Strategies to Keep You Alive

Strategy #1: Go to a Walmart!

Walmart is the key! It’s what’s going to save humanity from this madness! The first thing you need to do once a zombie apocalypse happens is to go to the nearest Walmart, or other similar shops. Think about it, Walmart got everything you and your family needs to survive. It has enough food and water to also feed hundreds of people for a couple of months. It’s got everything you can possibly need including baby products if ever you get to give birth in the middle of a zombie apocalypse. The best thing is that they also have weapons and other tools in the sporting goods section to get you protected if ever you need to go outside – not to mention it’s also quite spacious and air-conditioned (unless of course zombies busted it already). It’s definitely a great place to keep you safe and well – fed.

Strategy #2: Seal ALL the entrances!

Say for example you’re able to get from your house to a Walmart store along with other people; the next thing to do is to seal all the entrances.  Fortunately, Walmart only has about one or two main entrances (excluding the service entrances but there’s not a lot so it’s pretty manageable). AVOID going to malls because it has too many entrances in addition to service entrances. Ideally, you need to seal the glass entrances with cement bricks or something heavy (this will probably take you a day or two) so that zombies can’t easily crack it up, this will all buy you time to get away and prepare for an attack. It’s also best if you can assign someone to guard the entrances and take turns so if ever a zombie tries to force himself in, you/ your family can be alerted.

Strategy #3: Cover the glasses with paper or a piece of clothing

This is quite important since you don’t want to attract too many zombies from the outside. Even if you’re completely sealed and locked up, they could come together and just use their sheer crazy force to get themselves in. The best thing to do to is to get them distracted elsewhere by covering the glasses up.

Strategy #4: Fill containers with tap water

Most likely you’re going to lose power in the next couple of days, and when that happens, you’re also going to lose sewage this is why you need to start filling up every container you can find with tap water because eventually all the bottled water in the store is going to run out which is why you want to have that extra tap water when you don’t have any plumbing.

Strategy #5: Use the “Buddy System”

Characters in zombie movies are usually killed not just by walkers but by their friends or family who got bitten. Obviously the first thing that comes to mind is to try and save them, and maybe cure their zombie bite – and we all know how that all ends.  So, if one of your friends or family member gets bitten by a zombie, just shoot them in the head right away. Don’t wait, don’t second – guess, don’t show mercy because they’ll eventually bite you and endanger other people’s lives for sure.

Just do it and then maybe cry a bucket of tears after that because at least you did it for the greater good. There’s no going back from there, they are as good as dead because the infection or disease will eventually enter their bloodstream and take over their brains. So once bitten, look them in the eyes and say your goodbyes real quick then pull the trigger.  Always remember: Once bitten, you’ll get eaten so just kill ‘em!

 Strategy #6: Suit up!

If this is how it all ends, you may want to do it in style eh? Normal clothes like t- shirts and jeans aren’t going to cut it, and so are your heels! You need a stronger and thicker suit. What you can do is to cover yourself up with jacket along with aluminum or some material that they can’t bite into. Make sure to cover key areas like your neck, hands, arms and legs since that’s usually what they go for.

Strategy #7: Think long – term

Obviously, the tips above will only make you survive for like a few months to possibly a few years. Zombies are already dead and they will never stop unless total annihilation occurs. You’ll eventually run out of supplies but that’s okay – the only thing you need is to go back to basics: food and water. You will need to learn how to plant – and guess what? Walmart got you covered!  They have a garden section so you can get your supplies there and a couple of seeds maybe, then just go to the roof and start growing. That’s your best shot to being sustainable as you either wait for rescue or perhaps build a new society.
